VA Ann Arbor Recognized By American Board of Internal Medicine

Healthcare System Wins in “Creating Value Challenge”

Ann Arbor, MI -
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation recognized VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS) for their body of quality improvement (QI) work and innovative ideas aimed at improving patient value.

The challenge was to show that we are making improvements not to save money or make things easier for our organization, but to advance our processes in order to improve our Veterans’ experience,” said Stacy Frick, Quality Improvement Coordinator.

Dr. Christopher Petrilli, a Medicine Service Hospitalist, submitted five current QI projects to the “Creating Value Challenge”, a competition sponsored by the ABIM Foundation, Costs of Care, and the Leapfrog Group. A nationally recognized judging panel selected only seven hospitals out of 83 submissions.  Not only was VA Ann Arbor Medical Center one of the seven, but also is the only VA hospital in the country to receive this recognition.

The QI project submissions for the AAVA included:

  • Telemetry/Cardiac Monitoring – Implementation of American Heart Association (AHA) Telemetry guidelines to improve resource utilization and patient satisfaction without sacrificing patient safety

  • Admission-to-Discharge Medication Reconciliation Tool - Veteran-Centered tool that improves the quality of discharge instructions, counseling, and medication lists during transitions of care.

  • PRE-operative Patient Assessment Readiness and Education (PREPARE) Clinic - This is a new clinic at VAAAHS staffed by a team of internists and anesthesiologists who gauge risk and actively manage patients prior to undergoing surgical procedures.  Their goals include implementation of evidence-based perioperative measures, avoidance of unnecessary testing, improving day-of-surgery cancellations, and improving wait time from initial evaluation to surgery.

  • Reducing repeat colonoscopy by improving inpatient preparation – Deploying evidence-based interventions which best prepare inpatients that require colonoscopy preps.  This results fewer repeat colonoscopies, overall better quality of preparation, and improved Veteran satisfaction during their hospitalization.

  • Improving communication at the bedside – In collaboration between medicine and interior design, chair hooks and chairs for providers were installed in ever inpatient room.  This simple fix, allowed for eye-to-eye conversations between providers and patients, improving communication and rapport and promoting therapeutic relationships between clinician and patient.
VAAAHS will be recognized and will present the winning projects at the Association of American Medical College Integrating Quality (AAMC IQ) meeting June 8-9, 2017 in Chicago.
