Volunteer Supports Annual Baby Shower for Veterans
Neha Navathe is a junior Greenhills School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has been an enthusiastic volunteer since elementary school. During her third summer volunteering at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS), she requested to volunteer in the Women’s Health Clinic. While assisting staff with various responsibilities, she learned about the financial hardship many Women Veterans face after having a baby.
As she came to learn about the Annual Baby Shower for Women Veterans hosted by VAAAHS, she contacted the Women Veterans Program Manager, Cheryl Allen, to find out how she could help. She found out that baby diapers are one of the most expensive items for new moms. Neha then decided to start a Diaper Drive in her community—at her school and in her neighborhood and she also reached out to friends and family for donations. The Diaper Drive was a great success and Neha raised over a thousand dollars to support the VAAAHS 2018 Baby Shower for Women Veterans.
Neha has received 3 Presidential Gold Pin awards for volunteering (over 100 hours per year), a Varsity letter from United Way Washtenaw for volunteering and has several leadership roles for service at her school (Student Services Leader, Motor City Saturdays, Student Council). Neha wants to study biology and pursue a career in health sciences. VAAAHS is thankful to Neha and all the volunteers who help make a difference in the lives of the Veterans we are honored to serve.
