The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System cut the ribbon to the newly constructed Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Hybrid Surgical Suite on December 8, 2014. TAVR is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that replaces a diseased heart valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place. The procedure allows older patients, or those with underlying medical conditions to receive a new aortic valve without being subjected to the risk of major surgery. VAAAHS will perform its first TAVR procedure in January and will be only the sixth VA in the country to offer this life-saving procedure to America’s Veterans.
