Inaugural Grekin Research Award Presentation
During the 2016 VA Research Week celebrations at the Ann Arbor VA, Rod Hayward, MD, was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Roger J. Grekin Research Award. The award, which honors the legacy of long-time VA clinician, researcher and leader Roger Grekin, recognizes an outstanding VAAAHS clinical researcher who contributes to the VA research mission through excellence in clinical care, research, mentorship and leadership. “Rod exemplifies the values that Roger lived”, stated Rick Weitzel, MD, Associate Chief of Staff for Research as he presented the award.
Dr. Hayward has served at the Ann Arbor VA for more than 20 years, including as Director, VA Center for Practice Management and Outcomes Research, for nearly 15 of those years. He is a Professor at the University of Michigan within the Division of General Medicine, School of Medicine, as well as within the Department of Health Management and Policy, School of Public Health. Dr. Hayward also serves as the Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Foundation at the University and VAAAHS.
Dr. Craig Jaffe, member of the Grekin Research Award Committee and long-time colleague of Dr. Grekin, introduced the award at a ceremony that took place during the Research Week Plenary on May 19, 2016. Mrs. Linda Grekin, wife of the late Roger J. Grekin, and several members of the Grekin family were in attendance.
The award consists of a plaque as well as a monetary award to be used toward the research goals of the recipient. The program is funded from donations received through the Roger J. Grekin Research Fund through the Veterans Education and Research Administration of Michigan (VERAM).
